James “Rusty” Bowman, III, M.D./Ph.D. specializes in General Orthopedics with a sub-specialized focus on primary and revision total knee and total hip arthroplasty.  Recently recruited to St. Vincent’s Orthopedics to expand SVO’s clinical focus on Arthritis/Osteoarthritis and Total Joint Health, Dr. Bowman is trained in the latest techniques of total joint replacement, as well as revision of historical total joint arthroplasties.  His scope of practice also includes the treatment of Orthopedic Trauma, Fractures and Dislocations.

Dr. Bowman is a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College.  He then received dual Doctoral training in both Medicine and Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.  Following his orthopedic residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Dr. Bowman completed a fellowship in adult joint reconstruction at the University of Colorado, Denver before accepting an Associate position with St. Vincent’s Orthopedics, PC.

Dr. Bowman is an active member of AAHKS (American Association of Hip & Knee Surgeons), AAOS (American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons) & the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society.  He presently maintains hospital affiliation with St. Vincent’s Birmingham, and performs surgery at the OrthoSports Center on campus downtown.

Dr. Bowman is married with a young daughter, and outside of the office enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, automotive repair, and a variety of outdoors activities from hunting to snow skiing.
